FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

ONCE ORDERED... HOW DO I GET THE LUTS?

After you place an order and your payment method has been approved through PayPal, an email is automatically generated that will send you download links (to the email you provided). Then, you'll download a ZIP file that will contain the .cube LUT files.

HOW DO I INSTALL THE LUTS?

First - and this is important - you have to UNZIP the file that was sent to you (either on a computer or mobile device - we use WinZip for iOS). Once unzipped you'll find the individual LUTs to install and use. And it depends on what software you are using on how to do this step. See our quick tutorials below for getting started with some popular options. If you are still having trouble please refer to the support offerings from the particular software manufacturer. Or, drop us a line and we'll do our best to assist you.

*PRO TIP - If you're using Adobe Premiere Pro or FCP you do NOT have to actually install the LUTs into the software (although you can, but we don't). You simply keep them in a folder of your choice (and that is always available when you're editing) and then import them, as needed. In Premiere use Lumetri Color (then Browse) and in FCP use the Custom LUT effect. Other software such as Davinci Resolve or LumaFusion you do have to import the LUTs into the software. Please see our getting started tutorials below for more info.

DO THE LUTS WORK WITHIN THE FiLMiC PRO APP?

Yes and no. :) No with the Legacy V6 app. But yes, with the V7 app. You can now import them to preview footage as you shoot or bake in the looks (but don't do this). You can also now use LUTs in the Blackmagic camera app. But typically LUTs are applied to footage within editing, effects or color correction software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, FCP, LumaFusion (iOS app) or Davinci Resolve.

DO THE FiLMiC PRO LUTS WORK ON APPLE LOG FOOTAGE?

No. We now have LUTs specifically for Apple log.

DO THE LEGACY LOGV1 LUTS (THE FIRST GENERATION) WORK WITH LOGV2 FOOTAGE?

Yes. The intensity or strength will likely need to be adjusted depending on the clip (like you do in most cases already). However, LogV2 is more saturated - and sometimes that can look good - but other times you'll need to dial that back to taste. But overall the LUTs do work fine. Watch the tutorial video below for more info.

UPDATE: We include LogV2 LUTs with our original LogV1 LUTs. If you already own the legacy LogV1 LUTs though you do NOT have to update as mentioned above they do work fine. However, we do include both in our 8-bit LUT packs (in our 10-bit LogV3 LUT packs they are not included). You can read more about this here.

DO LOGV1 OR LOGV2 LUTS WORK WITH THE 10-BIT LOGV3 or LOGV3+?

Technically, yes - but we don't recommend them for LogV3 or LogV3+ as the log profiles are very different. We have packs specifically for LogV3 and packs for LogV3+. Haven't heard about this? Learn more about LogV3 here. Or LogV3+ here.

DO THE LUTS WORK WITH LOG OR FLAT FOOTAGE SHOT WITH THE MOMENT PRO CAMERA APP?

Yes. We have tested and confirmed our LogV1 & LogV2 LUTs do work with Moment log and flat footage. Just like with any footage though the LUTs will need to be adjusted and customized depending on the shot.

*NOTE: While Moment calls their color profile "Log" our tests show that it is not actually a logarithmic gamma curve being applied to the footage. While we are not video engineers and our testing is unscientific what appears to be happening is a global contrast adjustment. This is fine in and of itself as an effect or "film look", but do not expect to see much if any dynamic range improvements shooting in their log profile. Go here to learn more.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOUR LUTS AND THE deLOG OR deFLAT LUTS BY FiLMiC PRO THAT ARE BUILT-IN TO LUMAFUSION (THE IOS EDITING APP FOR IPHONE AND IPAD)?

Our "DeLog" Rec 709 Utility LUTs are similar to the FiLMiC Pro deLOG and deFLAT as they simply correct the log profile to a "standard" look. In testing though we do see a difference in using our Utility LUTs and like the end result better. But, beyond the standard correcting of footage - that's where the similarities end. Our FiLMiC Pro LUT Packs offer a variety of different looks to help tell your story (Cinematic, Everyday and Vintage).

DO YOUR LUTS ONLY WORK WITH iPHONE FOOTAGE?

No. Our LUT Packs were created to work with log or flat footage shot with the FiLMiC Pro app (and now also the Moment app). So that means ANY smartphone (i.e. Android) footage will work that was shot with FiLMIC Pro - not just iPhone (we just use iPhones in our mobile filmmaking ).

*NOTE: This is true for everything EXCEPT shooting ProRes log. Since Android devices cannot shoot ProRes the LogV3+ LUT packs are specifically designed for iPhone shot footage.

CAN THESE LUTS BE USED ON OTHER FOOTAGE NOT SHOT IN A LOG OR FLAT PROFILE?

Yes. Typically you would just dial back the intensity or strength of the LUT. However, these were created to use on log or flat FiLMiC Pro footage (in our experience we have found that the log and flat are similar color profiles in FiLMiC Pro and our LUTs work for both). Note that we are planning to release specific LUTs for other color profiles, including standard Rec 709 and the 10-bit HDR available on the iPhone 12 or later models (not to be confused with 10-bit LogV3).

ARE LUTS "DRAG AND DROP" TYPE EFFECTS?

Yes and no. Yes, that you can easily apply a LUT and sometimes can get instantly good results. But typically speaking, LUTs are a great place to start - then you refine the look to taste.
