5 Tips for Creating Cinematic B-roll

One thing we love about shooting with smartphones is that they're always with you and so whenever you see something interesting you can quickly and easily capture a moment.

And that's exactly what we did when we saw a dead grasshopper being eaten by ants. Btw, no animals were harmed during this production! :) The grasshopper was already dead when we found him.

But this was an interesting nature scene to stumble on and without our iPhone XS Max being handy (and running FiLMiC Pro) we would have missed this b-roll opportunity.

Beyond just always having your phone with you though it's good to have some know-how on the best ways to shoot and ultimately create visually interesting b-roll sequences (or just b-roll footage in general). In this case we shot it in a more cinematic style, which is what we typically prefer (versus say a news b-roll style).

So in saying all this here are 5 Tips we recommend to create cinematic b-roll footage with a smartphone...

Note too, many of these tips can apply to shooting with any kind of camera - not just smartphones.

So, do you use these things when shooting your footage? And/or do you have any other good tips that help your b-roll shine? Let us know in the comments below or hit us up on social media.

Btw, if you're new to mobile filmmaking and using the FiLMiC Pro app then check out our online course The Complete Guide To FiLMiC Pro and SAVE 10% using this link.

Happy filmmaking! :)
